Scottish Tartans Tartans are often though of as being associated with Clans or families but, today, there are many that represent districts, corporate bodies and even football teams. Contrary to popular misconception, there are no rules about which tartan plaid a person may wear. Some folk, especially Scottish expatriates with ancient Scottish surnames or family histories, will take great pride in wearing the tartan associated with their name. Other people simply choose a tartan which appeals to them. Frequently there are several versions of the same tartan. For example, a muted version may carry the prefix "Hunting" while a more vivid modern version may be used for social occasions.
