Scottish Highland Dress

In many ways the terms "Highland Dress" is a misnomer in modern usage but let's not complicate matters with historical accuracy!

Today, the term is usually employed to describe a tartan based outfit in one of three categories:

  • Formal
  • Day-Wear
  • Casual

At the more formal end of the scale, a kilt, dress sporran and Prince Charlie jacket worn with a dress shirt and bow tie, is perfectly acceptable as an alternative to a dinner jacket, tuxedo or evening suit.

The same kilt, with a day sporran, tweed jacket and ordinary tie will serve for virtually any "smart" day wear purpose while, for casual wear, the self-same kilt and sporran may be worn with anything from an open-necked shirt to a rugby jersey. What other nationality can get so much use out of a single garment???

And, of course, that's only the male options. Ladies have an equally versatile approach to highland dress and the use of tartans.
